Keeping the Bleeding Down When You Get a Tooth Extracted

Having a tooth extraction performed is never an enjoyable procedure, but there are steps that you can take to minimize issues like bleeding and discomfort after you have the work done.

It's important to understand what you can and cannot do after a tooth extraction to keep the bleeding down. Take some time to understand how you should behave after your extraction and you'll minimize your bleeding and any other complications.

Apply Pressure
One of the best ways to minimize bleeding and to effectively stop bleeding from the socket where your tooth once was is to apply pressure to that area when you're at home. Keep gauze or a clean cloth available in your home for this express purpose.

When bleeding begins, put a wad of cloth or gauze over the socket and bit down firmly. Keep pressure on the area for between 45 minutes and an hour to effectively stop the bleeding. You may have to do this several times during the first 24-hour period after surgery.

The Tea Bag Trick

If standard pressure is not enough to stop the bleeding and get your socket under control once again, consider using a black tea bag to take on the task. A regular black tea bag contains tannic acid, a substance that can help with bleeding issues.

Simply put the damp tea bag over the spot and leave it there for 45 minutes to an hour while applying slight pressure with your mouth. The tannic acid will help encourage a clot to form stopping the bleeding up.

Each time that bleeding continues after having the extraction performed, use one of the two techniques outlined above to stop it once again. It's important to get your bleeding under control and if it persists after the first 24 hours we urge you to come in and see us once again so we can evaluate your mouth.

"Had an overall great experience with Dr. Ryan. The staff was very courteous and professional. Most important, the work they did, (two implants, to hold lower dentures) was very secure and I'm free of the hassle and pain. I was concerned at first but he answered all my questions and the whole procedure went well. I definitely would recomend them if you need that type of work done. 2 thumbs up!"

"The office is well run. Everyone I had contact with was friendly and knowledgeable. Procedures were explained and all questions answered. Oral surgery can be an intimidating proposition, but Dr. Ryan and his staff are sensitive to that by providing excellent pain management and results."
