Things to Avoid Following Oral Surgery

Having oral surgery is a big deal, even if you are having a very simple procedure. It requires you to take it easy following your procedure, and it also requires you to take good care of yourself.

If you have never had oral surgery before, it is very important that you know how to recover properly. Some things are fine for you to do while other things will require more time before you begin doing them again. Here are some important things to steer clear of when you have oral surgery.

Make Sure to Avoid These Things When You Have Oral Surgery

Following oral surgery, you need to avoid anything that involves using a sucking motion from your mouth. This includes smoking cigarettes and drinking anything out of a straw. When you use a sucking motion, it often dislodges the clot, which is all that stands between you and more bleeding.

You also need to avoid things that get you up and moving around vigorously. Exercise should be stopped following oral surgery as that is going to increase your heart rate and blood pressure, which can increase your pain, bleeding, and your swelling.

Lying down flat on your back should also be avoided right after oral surgery. Ideally, you want to sleep propped up for the first 2-3 nights after you get oral surgery, sometimes longer.

Your oral surgeon will let you know how long is best for you to do this. By sleeping propped up, you get to reduce your swelling, which lets you heal more quickly.

For more tips on what you should avoid after having any type of oral surgery, contact our office today. They can give you tips based on the exact procedure that you are having done, allowing you to heal as quickly as possible.

"Had an overall great experience with Dr. Ryan. The staff was very courteous and professional. Most important, the work they did, (two implants, to hold lower dentures) was very secure and I'm free of the hassle and pain. I was concerned at first but he answered all my questions and the whole procedure went well. I definitely would recomend them if you need that type of work done. 2 thumbs up!"

"The office is well run. Everyone I had contact with was friendly and knowledgeable. Procedures were explained and all questions answered. Oral surgery can be an intimidating proposition, but Dr. Ryan and his staff are sensitive to that by providing excellent pain management and results."
