Choosing Between Implants & Dentures

One of the best ways to ensure that your oral health remains in good shape throughout your lifetime is to take the best care possible of your natural teeth. Do not forget that your teeth play a big role in your ability to eat and to speak and that your quality of life might drop should you have any extracted. With that said, at Mountain Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, we understand that sometimes the best option when it comes to sustaining a patient’s oral health, in the long run, is to extract a tooth. When that happens, we are proud to offer our patients quality restorations to help maintain a fully functional mouth and a natural smile.

Restoration Options

When you have a tooth extracted, you will be left with some space in your mouth. Losing even one tooth can cause issues with your ability to do everyday activities like speak or eat while losing more than that can significantly impact your quality of life. To help ensure that you can live your life normally, it is important to make the right decision about tooth restoration and replacement. The two most common options are dentures and dental implants.

Dentures

Dentures are a popular tooth replacement option among individuals who have lost all of their natural teeth. Dentures can replace all of them in one fell swoop, allowing you to maintain a beautiful smile without enduring multiple implant surgeries. This might also be the best option for individuals who are already accustomed to not eating hard foods, and who want to spend as little as possible their replacement teeth. Note that because they are removable, dentures do relatively little when it comes to providing support to eat or speak.

Implants

Dental implants are another tooth replacement option. Unlike dentures, implants are permanent fixtures of your mouth. In fact, they eventually become part of your jawbone itself and function like natural teeth! That means that you can eat and speak normally with dental implants because the implant is rooted in place. The downside to dental implants, when compared to dentures, might be the implant surgery itself. With dentures, there is no surgery required because the dentures are simply placed on top of your gums.

Which is Better?

To be honest, both dentures and implants have their advantages and their disadvantages. Dentures, for example, do not provide the kind of functionality that implants do. While implants support your ability to bite, chew, and speak and work like a normal tooth, dentures essentially work to replace your smile and help keep your appearance looking natural. The right choice for you depends on what your goals are for tooth replacement. If you want something that will feel natural, then implants are probably the better choice. If you just want a quick smile replacement, then dentures could be the option for you.

WHY OUR PATIENTS &
REFERRING DOCTORS LOVE US

"Had an overall great experience with Dr. Ryan. The staff was very courteous and professional. Most important, the work they did, (two implants, to hold lower dentures) was very secure and I'm free of the hassle and pain. I was concerned at first but he answered all my questions and the whole procedure went well. I definitely would recomend them if you need that type of work done. 2 thumbs up!"

"Best doc we have ever been to. My son felt safe and relaxed with him and his staff."
~ George G.

"The office is well run. Everyone I had contact with was friendly and knowledgeable. Procedures were explained and all questions answered. Oral surgery can be an intimidating proposition, but Dr. Ryan and his staff are sensitive to that by providing excellent pain management and results."
~ Lisa S.
