Gum Disease with Dentures Is Possible, and Needs Effective Treatment

A lot of people make the assumption that once you get dentures and have no teeth left, that you have no need to worry about gum disease anymore. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

While it may not appear the same way, you can still struggle with gum disease with dentures. If you find out that you have gum disease at the same time as using dentures, it is important that you seek out the right type of treatment.

What Type of Treatment is Necessary for Gum Disease with Dentures?

When it comes to getting the right type of treatment that helps with gum disease while you wear dentures, you have to consider what stage of gum disease you are at. Early gum disease is normally treated by cleaning the area between the gums and the teeth.

If you are wearing dentures, chances are, that isn't a realistic option. You can normally clean out the pockets of bacteria between the teeth and gums as well, but again, that is not likely needed.

When wearing dentures, the treatment often requires going into the gums and treating the areas around the bone for the same bacteria that would sit against your teeth when you had them. While you can seek out a periodontist's expertise in this area, you can also come in and see us as oral surgeons.

We can go into your gums, clean out the area around the gums, and stitch them back up. When your teeth were extracted, some of the bacteria may have hung around. This could be causing a lot of your issues at this time.

To find out what options you have for treating any remaining gum disease, call us. We will have you come in, and show you what is going on. Then, we can develop a treatment plan to help!

"Had an overall great experience with Dr. Ryan. The staff was very courteous and professional. Most important, the work they did, (two implants, to hold lower dentures) was very secure and I'm free of the hassle and pain. I was concerned at first but he answered all my questions and the whole procedure went well. I definitely would recomend them if you need that type of work done. 2 thumbs up!"

"The office is well run. Everyone I had contact with was friendly and knowledgeable. Procedures were explained and all questions answered. Oral surgery can be an intimidating proposition, but Dr. Ryan and his staff are sensitive to that by providing excellent pain management and results."
